Kicking off, we were very lucky with our accommodation, booking an AirBnB rental that had only recently become free due to a last-minute cancellation. The property owners Melanie and John take great delight in our Lisdoonvarna excitement and kindly offer us a lift into the town that night.
We all agree that this story is a definite good omen for a night of romance that is sure to follow To kick the evening off we head to The Matchmakers Bar, the infamous Lisdoonvarna location where we hear matchmaker Willie Daly is to be found. The place is absolutely heaving with people, the majority of whom are middle-aged men. As we wait in the queue we watch Willie in action; he is warm and friendly and knows how to make people feel at ease.
Willie Daly is a third generation matchmaker and is pretty much the king of this entire festival. What does Willie do, exactly? They have travelled all the way from Utah to meet Willie, and their eyes shine brightly with a mixture of hope and nerves. Ho ho ho, we know your game, Willie! Eventually, our turn comes and we hand over our completed forms, giggling like school girls.

For the month of September, this tiny spa town of residents hosts the popular Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival — a month-long celebration bringing together hopeful romantics from around the world. The festival is notorious for its lively all-day, all-night dancing and impromptu marriage proposals often triggered after a few pints at the pub. A third-generation matchmaker, Daly is best known for presiding over the festival.
The event is taking place the week before Valentine’s Day. A pub in Vicarstown is running a special matchmaking event next month in a bid to combat rural isolation in the area. The Strand Bar are hosting the old fashioned event on Friday February 7th just in time for Valentine’s Day however the organiser says that it is about more than finding love. Owner Maureen O’Sullivan told CorkBeo that she has organised the event to help people form friendships and find a companion.
People might just want someone to sit down and have dinner with and a chat, they just want someone they can ring up and maybe go to the cinema with or something like that.
